Introduction:

I'm documenting here my process of building a nice SMTP server, perhaps it will help someone. Atleast it's a quick reference for myself. I expect you to know how to compile stuff and troubleshoot things.

Disclaimer: These pages are always work-in-progress.

We shall use these proven software:

One thing I don't like is packages. I like to compile stuff myself and know it's setup the way I want to. Anyone saying that packages are easier is not taking things seriously enough. It takes more time to fix all the hassle from bad packages, as the creators sometimes make strange decisions. In the long run, it's much more rewarding to use these programs in their original form and in a properly configured way. In the world of spam and malware, it's also important to be up-to-date and packages can take a while to get released. You can simply create your own packages if you have many servers.

I use many OSes, so I like to have a portable setup too. No system-dependent locations etc.
